Sebago Full Moon Cask Night (End of An Era Party)

I walked downtown on the misty, rainy and beautiful type of night that only can happen in a rainy New England spring. Light from street lamps oozed through the haze and the faint, blue glow of the neon signs of Sebago brewing beckoned me towards Middle Street. Sebago Brewing Company is famous around here for their Full Moon Cask Nights but this night, in particular, was special. It was the last cask night in their current location before moving further down the block to a bigger and better space. And, being American Craft Beer Week, I was not planning to turn down the opportunity for great craft beer. Continue reading

Weyerbacher Tiny

I should have read this one. I was standing in a Whole Foods in Portland, looking at a display that included Stone, Weyerbacher, Allagash and more than a few cage-top/corked brews of various strengths and specialties. Without looking down, I grabbed the Weyerbacher I didn’t recognize and brought it home. I had assumed, incorrectly, that I’d soon get a taste of its contents and discover what “Tiny” was all about. Baxter Brewing Co. – Pamola Xtra Pale Ale

The long-awaited debut beer from Baxter Brewing Company of Lewiston Maine hit the shelves last week, and everyone I’ve talked to is wondering the same thing. Kate The Great turns to Lady Luck

It seems as if every year the process of trying to obtain a much sought-after bottle of Portsmouth Brewery’s “Kate the Great” changes, and this year they’ve added an element of chance. Instead of having people line up on the release day to get a calendar page to get in to buy a bottle, they’ve taken an entirely different approach. Starting around – and I say around because the facebook page for the brewery just reminded everyone that there’s no firm date – January 24th, the brewery will be selling custom-printed scratch tickets that offer a chance to buy a bottle of Kate for $2 each. Now, before you bristle about the brewery capitalizing on demand and making their own lottery, you have to hear part 2 of the plan. They’re going to take all the sales from the chance tickets and give it to a local charity. [...read more] Continue reading

Middle Ages Brewing Company – Double Wench

For their 15th Anniversary, Middle Ages Brewing Company in my hometown of Syracuse NY decided to up the ante and try a double IPA version of one of their flagship brews. Their regular Wailing Wench label features a lighter red-haired beauty instead of the dark red haired wench on this version’s label – though I think that the Double Wench has increased the size of her… “tracts of land” considerably. Continue reading
