Okay, okay, I know we’re probably tired of the political rhetoric, but this podcast episode touches on a bill in the NH house that has the potential to change the NH brewing scene for the worse in one fell swoop – a proposal to increase the taxes on beer produced in NH. Our last-minute-but-still-awesome-substitute-guest J.T. from Smuttynose Brewing Co. was on hand to give his take on this among other topics.

About rating beer, I don’t mind putting a rating on my beers, but I agree with you that your mood can affect things. Sometimes I think something is a 5/5 (I have very few 5/5s) and when I have it next I wonder why I said 5/5. But I have a good idea of what 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 means to ME and I don’t expect that to match what others say.

I rated Southern Tier Pumking 2/5. A friend commented back, “only a 2???” So I commented back, “yes, I’m not a big fan of spiced beers.” And I’m not. So it’s a 2 for me. Why isn’t it a 1? Because I can tell that it’s a quality beer, but it’s just not for me. 3 means I like it and I’d drink it anytime. 4 means I love it. 5 means I’m nuts for it. But that’s MY rating system and I don’t think it necessarily matches with other people. In fact, I know it doesn’t. I discussed this with my friend and he rates using a different system. Good, good for him. Good for all of us!
