The Beer Babe

Coney Island Freaktoberfest

Yes, this is a little out of season. But I decided to try a bunch of Coney Island Brews and picked up a few, so this one seemed like its seasonal relevance would fade faster than the rest. The label of this beer features a very freak face. The contents feature a ery freaky surprise. The beer is bright red, with pink head. Not almost red, not kind-of red, but a color that can best be described as cranberry juice with pink foam. Weirdness.

My brain would have really liked it if it smelled like berries, or pomegranate, or punch. But instead it smelled like an Oktoberfest – malty and subtle. The taste, too, is a conflict. There is a hinted sweetness to it, that my brian might be installing there (think, looking at an apple and biting an onion…) but the overall flavor isn’t as warm or deep as I had hoped. Its a little thin, with just hints of hops and malt.
It isn’t a complex or a particularly smooth brew, either. I’m not trying to tear it down, but beyond the novelty and surprise of the red color, this isn’t one I’d go busting down doors to find. However, if you’re looking for something weird and “freaky” to bring to a Halloween party, this might be just the trick.

Hey there. This is Zak Davis from Shmaltz Brewing Company, the makers of the line of Coney Island Lagers. Sorry the Freaktoberfest didn’t do it for you. Aside from the blood-red color, we also brewed it with 6.66% alcohol content for Halloween. Hope you enjoy the rest of the line more. Have a great new year.
