Smuttynose Maibock (Big Beer Series)

Brewery: Smuttynose Brewing Company, Portsmouth, NH
Beer: Maibock
Rating: 3.5

A Maibock is a spring seasonal ale that is lighter than a traditional “bock.” Though not dark brown, as the dark bottle would suggest, this is still a “robust” seasonal offering. This beer is marketed in a large pint-sized bottle and is part of Smuttynose’s seasonal collection. The beer is an orange to light brown color, and slightly cloudy. The head dissapears quickly, but the aroma lingers.

The taste is smooth, wheaty with some nut flavor. It is a fairly strongly-flavored beer for a spring brew, but the wheat keeps its finish light. I would recommend this beer be paired with some kind of lightly grilled food – some grilled veggies and steak tips, perhaps.

I love all things wheat, but I wasn’t overwhelmed by sweetness, which is what I expected. I was pleasantly surprised at its lightness. A good one to split with a meal.
